"So Campy" - The Met Gala
So Campy by Jacqueline Alvarez 05/13/19
The Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, hosted the annual event that all fashion enthusiasts were waiting for.
The theme was "Camp: Notes on Fashion", a lot of people questioned what celebrities wore on the pink carpet, confused on what it had to do with camping. This has nothing to do with tents and overlooking the stars while in a sleeping bag.
The meaning of this year’s theme is in so many words, flamboyant, flashy, theatrical, ostentatious, exaggerated, outrageous, over-the-top, many failed to interpret it. Singer Cher is the queen of camp, 90s Madonna the princess, dare I say, Lady Gaga is the baby of camp.
This was the opportunity for expressing creativity, I was expecting lots of glitter, a bit of drag, some BDSM wear. Compared to past events, they left more to be desired, the glam, art and imagination was limited to a few. Below are the ones I thought were worth mentioning.
Lady gaga put on a show, she introduced three outfits, all designed by longtime friend Brandon Maxwell. She entered the red carpet accompanied by five escorts whom assisted her in wardrobe. Initially wearing a fuchsia cloak with a long train, she then took it off revealing a long black gown with a bustle at hip, followed by a satin column dress with bust spaghetti straps, ending with a third layer which featured an embellished black bra, panty and fishnet stockings. To complete the looker she wore gold eyelashes, Tiffany & Co necklace and tall black boots.
Actor/Singer Ezra Miller here enjoying the night. He wore a white Cape adorned with clear crystals around the neck, which he then removed to show his ensemble a black and white pinstripe suit with a train. A corset made of crystals hugged his waist, this outfit by Burberry by Riccardo Tisci. Sporting a mask which he then took off and revealed his face, an optical illusion look done by Makeup artist Mimi Choi.
Kim Kardashian arrived wearing a skintight nude dress by Manfred Thierry Mugler. She was corseted by Mr. Pearl, which helped her waist look tiny and accentuate her curves. The dress was sequined, with crystals hanging throughout the dress, giving the appearance of dripping water, the dress took eight months to make. The designer stated that he “envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.” Kardashian opted for “wet" mermaid waves as her hairstyle, clear heels and droplets on her nails.
Rapper Cardi B made a grand entrance with a mermaid gown designed by Thom Browne.
The deep red dress featured a detachable three meter-long quilted train, a heart-shaped cutout on the backside, beaded at bust and crotch area and 44-carat ruby nipples.
Croquet feathers, 30,000 to be exact, adorned the shoulders and around the edge of the train, bringing this look together, she accessorized with a beaded headpiece, the dress reportedly took 35 people and over 2,000 hours to make. An entourage of 10 was needed to help her move around and carry her train. We’ve got to give it up to Cardi, she is quickly becoming a fashion icon.
